Wisdom 智慧

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered,

“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

Only Character Endures

I wish to share with you a good article on the importance of “Character”, Fame, popularity and riches don’t last; only character endures written by Mr Soo Ewe Jin on 10 October 2011 in his weekly column in the Star newspaper.

Mr Soo Ewe Jin is the Deputy Executive Editor of the Star newspaper.  He shares with his readers a lot of his wisdom in his weekly Monday column called “Monday Starters” in the Star newspaper.  I follow his column weekly as there are many things he wrote about life and all that resonate with me.  I once translated without first seeking his permission an article he wrote titled “Moments spent with your children are priceless” which touched me deeply. I later received an encouraging note from him on the blog.  This pleasant surprise made me feel bad for not getting his prior approval.  This time, I told myself I must get his prior approval before I do so.  And I did.  Within half a day, he generously the go ahead.  This allows me to share this article and more importantly, the wisdom within with you.  Thank you, Mr Soo.

*******************************************************************

The Real You (VIA Stop 2-1)

At our second lesson, Dr Ryan brings us an enjoyable learning tour on Signature Strengths, i.e. our top 5 Character Strengths.

I would like to make a small pause here at my Second Stop, to make clear what Character Strength is about and I should quote from none other than Dr Christopher Peterson, who spent years studying the subject matter.  According to Dr Christopher Peterson (A Primer in Positive Psychology (2006), pp141-142), –

  • Character strength is widely recognised across cultures (termed: “ubiquitous”)
  • It is fulfilling and contributes to one’s happiness
  • It is morally valued
  • It does not diminish others
  • It has obvious antonyms that are “negative
  • It is trait like
  • It is measurable
  • It is distinct
  • It is strikingly embodied in some individuals
  • It is precociously shown by some children or youth
  • It is mission altogether in some individuals
  • It is the deliberate target of societal practices and rituals that try to cultivate it

There are altogether 6 ubiquitous Virtues, displayed by 24 Character StrengthsSignature Strengths are the top 5 Character Strengths of a person.  They represent the “real you”, the core of who you are.
