Bosses Take Note!

Referred by a friend: Daniel Pink on the surprising science of motivation.

According to Daniel Pink, a career analyst, employees today are motivated less by monetary rewards than by the following three key factors:
Autonomy – the urge to direct your own life
Mastery – the desire to get better and better from something that matters
Purpose – the yearning to do what we do in the service of something that is larger than ourselves.

Looking around people we work with, especially the new Generation Y, there seems to be quite some truths in the theory.  Bosses, something to take note!

Do you agree with Daniel Pink’s views? You are most welcome to share your views in this blog.

One GooD THinG Money Cannot Buy

“I really want to say thank you! The sessions with you have made me understand myself and my strengths so much better. I now know what I really want for my career.”

In our coaching practice, we are taught to always ask for feedback on whether the coaching sessions actually help.  This was one feedback  I received last week from someone I had been coaching for a while.  It was a rather difficult case and it makes the “thank you” all the more meaningful to me.  You may not be able to imagine, but I have to say the satisfaction and fulfilment I receive from this simple one-liner is something that monetary reward can never measure up.

Sincerely, THANK YOU for your “thank you”.  =)

What about you? Do you have one Good THinG that even money cannot buy or provide?  You are most welcome to share your experience here.

oooooOOOOOooooo

The Correct Answer is… 。。

Remember this question:  2 minutes of your time, without discussing with anyone, what would be your answer to the following question?

This is always the first “game”I play with those who come seek career advice. I normally watch in amazement how they would seriously and diligently be making an effort to provide the best combination answer.

The correct answer, however, is…   “I don’t know!” because you really dont.

This question is intentionally made faulty in nature. It misses out the most critical element before you can carefully consider giving a good answer: the DESTINATION.

This exercise is used to hopefully drive home three main points in making career decision:

Know Your Destination (Career Goal): one must know where he/she is going before he/she can sit down and plan for the right direction to head for, the type of transportation one would take and a good time for embarkation. This can’t be more appropriate an analogy when applies to picking a good career choice: you need to first know where you would like to end up with, say in 3 to 5 or 5 to 10 years (GenYers will tell you 5-10 years time frame is way too long for them. So, I do accept 3-5 year plan from them. 🙂 ) Only then you decide what to start with, how to go about and which is the best route to arrive at your planned “destination” — your career goal.

Do Not Rush: Never decide your career in 2 minutes.  Never rush into applying for jobs (especially if that is your first), nor following your friends — which are only too common among graduates.

Do Homework, Discuss with Relevant People: unlike the exercise where you are not allowed to discuss, in making a good career decision, you must discuss with relevant people to find out more. The operative word here is “relevant”. So, choose purposefully who are the right one to speak with.  Do your homework.

“How?” you would ask, regarding determining your career goal.  Get to know yourself more in-depth — here would be a good start.

What is Your Answer?

3 Questions to a Preferred Career Choice

“What is the best career choice for me?”

In my line of work, this is perhaps THE most frequently asked question by the new graduates I worked with.  It is not surprising given they are fresh out of school.  In many cases, their graduating from a particular discipline has absolutely nothing to do with their career aspirations but what their parents have wanted them to study.

To answer the question, I like to show them the three big circles and answer their question by asking the following three questions (remember? We discussed this before.  The answers lie with them.  We are just there to ask good questions to help draw the answers out from them):-

Question (1) Passion – what do you really enjoy doing?  When you are doing a task that you are passionate about, you feel engaged and energized, you feel excited, you forget about time.

Question (2) Strengths – what are you really good at doing?  If you are good at something, you demonstrate a rapid learning curve compared to others around you.

Question (3) Values – what are the things that are so important to you that you will not trade them for anything?

Career choices that meet all the above, i.e. those in the intersection of the three circles, I tell them, would be your preferred career choices.  These choices match your passion with your strengths and are in congruence with your value system.  When you are doing something you are really passionate about and are good at it, naturally you would be performing outstandingly and happy.  It also brings sustainability.

“What about money?”  They would usually follow-up with this question.

“When you find a career within this intersection that sees you both happy and performing at your career, money will come.” is always my answer.

Of course, they would eventually learn that money indeed has very little to do with career satisfaction and happiness in life.

What about your career? Is it one in the intersection of your Passion, Strengths and Values?  Are you happy with what you are doing?  Do feel free to share your views.“什么是最适合我的职业选择?”

A Conversation with Dr Ryan

As a finale to the 7-lesson VIA Intensive training, VIA Institute generously offers an optional one-on-one bonus coaching session for every participant to review our VIA-Pro report (i.e. our character strength report).  The purpose of meeting was “To review your VIA-Pro report. This can be a general review session or it can be done in the context of a personal or professional growth issue, a goal, or a life difficulty.”

I signed myself up immediately for this precious opportunity.  And, am I glad I did.  I was fortunate to have Dr Ryan, our 7-week course instructor as my session coach.  I could not wait to meet him.

Dr Ryan was great!  That short 45-minute session was not only a fruitful one for my own self, it was really a good session to see how an experienced psychologist uses the VIA Report to coach his client.  I learned a lot about myself, I learned so much on applying it to people I wish to help.  At one point in time, under the patient guidance of Dr Ryan, I even achieved a breakthrough on how I have always seen myself.

My 3 most important discoveries from this 45-minute session with Dr Ryan :

  • Embrace all your signature strengths (your top 5 character strengths). This is because they represent the “real you”.  Accepting and embracing them allow you to be happier because this is when you are more true to yourself.  In other words, apply Gratitude to your character strengths, appreciate each of them, use them, mobilise and expand the use.
  • Prudence and Bravery can go hand-in-hand when used appropriately!  I was always so stubbornly believed that the two were in conflict and wish I could have more of one and less of the other. Dr Ryan made me see for myself there were incidences in my life that I used them together both at the same time; there was even a major one that enabled me to make a turning point in my life and got me to where I am today.  I can’t wait to tell Sarah (my team member) about this realisation.
  • When we apply character strengths to career coaching, it would not be  appropriate (close to dangerous) to conclude that certain character strengths match/fit certain career options.  A character strength can be used and applied within different career options.  The key to our role really is to help people to know their strengths and use them in as many situations as possible.  Dr Ryan gave a good example, a person high in Humor does not necessarily have to be a comedian.  He can be a doctor (no less!) and he can apply Humor when it is much needed to defuse stressful situations and this strength can be very helpful (and needed) in high-stress environment like a hospital.

THANK YOU DR RYAN, from the bottom of my heart.
